To address the inadequacy of EOL
care education in medical schools, the AMSA Foundation
developed the EOL Education Initiative, which focuses
on training medical students as advocates to improve
EOL curricula in their medical schools and residency
programs. The centerpiece of the program is the EOL
Education Leadership Training Program, a 6-week summer
experience designed to introduce up to 16 students
to palliative care issues at program sites in Miami
and Chicago.
Through their participation
in the program, students gain exposure to an interdisciplinary
hospice team of doctors, nurses, social workers, chaplains,
bereavement counselors, and volunteers while also learning
about the ethical, psychological, sociological, cultural
and spiritual aspects that surround EOL care. While at
their program sites, fellows develop
end of life curricula to be implemented at their medical
schools and shared via the AMSA website with medical
schools across the nation.
