Historically, The AMSA Foundation
has offered a number of programs that allow health
professions students to work within the community
and to gain experience at community and migrant health
centers. The HRSA-funded Fellowship Program on Health
Services introduced medical students to
issues in health services management for underserved
populations and allowed students to complete a field
project in community health centers. The AMSA
Foundation also managed the Interdisciplinary Community Health
Fellowship Program, which facilitated an
interdisciplinary team of students, including medical
and dental students, to identify and address a specific
health need in a specific community. In addition,
The AMSA Foundation has managed medical student and
resident programs for the National Health Service Corps Student
Preceptorship, Residency Preceptorship,
and Health Promotion/Disease Prevention Program in
hopes of encouraging health professional students
to explore careers providing care to underserved
populations.
Currently, The AMSA Foundation is
collaborating with the National Association for Community
Health Centers (NACHC) to identify opportunities
for dental and medical students to become more involved
in local Community Health Centers. NACHC has developed
an On-site Medical and Dental Student Training Opportunity
web tool to assist students in identifying opportunities
available to them in Community Health Centers. For
each search, NACHC lists Area Health Education Center
(AHEC) and Student/Resident Experiences and Rotations
in Community Health (SEARCH) state links (where available)
to serve as additional resources to students.

opportunities project, contact Joan Hedgecock, Director
