The AMSA Foundation, representing more than 68,000 physicians-in-training, and Nelnet have combined resources to offer a complete student aid program that empowers medical students to take charge of their education expenses.

"With the partnership, AMSA is able to provide a comprehensive loan program that best suits the needs of all medical students,” said AMSA National President Michael Ehlert, M.D. “AMSA is now in the position to educate medical students in partnership with one of the premiere education planning and financing companies. AMSA FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES NEW STRATEGIC INITIATIVES
Healthcare advocacy foundation working to build “the future of health and health care”
RESTON, VA – The American Medical Student Association (AMSA) Foundation has announced a bold restructuring plan. Under the new guidelines, the AMSA Foundation will pursue its goals under the heading of three strategic initiatives: the Center for the Future of Health Care, the Leadership University and the Student Action Center on Public Health and Medicine.

To lead the foundation’s new efforts, AMSA has named Shadia Garrison, MPH, as Director of Advancement. Garrison has worked at AMSA for the better part of a decade and has experience with cultural competency curricula, leadership training and healthcare team-building. Garrison also served as the first Chief Operating Officer for the National Physicians Alliance, an organization formed, with AMSA’s help, by former AMSA leaders.

The Center for the Future of Health Care focuses on research and education for both future providers and the general public. Current Center projects include the End-of-Life Fellowship Program, which introduces physicians-in-training to end-of-life issues and the Widening the Pipeline project, which helps develop a committed cadre of medical and dental students trained to educate and mentor middle and high school minority students on health careers options.

The AMSA Foundation believes that creating leaders in such diverse areas as women’s health, HIV/AIDS, health disparities, community and public health, humanism in medicine, primary care and rural health has led and will continue to lead to improved health outcomes among individual patients and whole populations. The Leadership University provides opportunities for tomorrow’s physician-advocates to learn about these important issues and to hone their skills as health policy advocates and experts.

The Student Action Center on Public Health and Medicine improves both the present and future of health care in America by helping to create new generations of physicians who are active in their communities and who understand public health issues. For the second year, the AMSA Foundation has appointed six global health scholars to work on global health disparities issues. This program aims to provide creative, passionate and intelligent students with the resources they need to bring to fruition responsible and innovative solutions to global health crises.
These new initiatives promise to lead the AMSA Foundation in an exciting new direction.

“For nearly nine years, I have worked with the AMSA Foundation in developing and implementing public health and medical education programs,” said Garrison.  “Now, as Director of Advancement, I am looking forward to getting in touch with past AMSA leaders to reconnect them with the organization that helped shape their career.  I am also enthusiastic about building relationships with corporate partners – I believe they will find the payoffs of working with us to be tremendous.”
